130: Tender Moments

I'm amused by how Santa Claus here isn't a person, but sort of a category of critter, like fairies or trolls. I've heard the word for Santa Claus "Julemand', literally Christmas Man, used in the plural and my son who had never heard of Santa Claus consistently will point and say "Hey, it's a Yulaman!" It makes a lot more sense that there'd be multiple hairy guys in red fur delivering presents rather than one. Anyway, while Santa is not native to Denmark, they do have these gnomes called Nisse, who have been here since pagan times who are a December fixture. They live in your attic and if you treat them right, they take care of your homestead. Part of the convenient is leaving them rice pudding in December and the more modern ones bring kids gifts. Kids here wear Nisse hats for most of December. It's a fascinating thing to me, because I often feel kids here are treated like magical creatures here, so seeing them dressing up as Nisse seems particularly appropriate. When we move I've been contemplating how I can lure Nisse to our new home's attic without attracting ants to the rice pudding...
