To be fair, we're very close to our mailman...

When I was in high school I met a girl from Pakistan (or Afghanistan, I can't remember which). She'd gotten into my fancy private school on a scholarship. Our families became good friends. It reminded my parents of what it had been like when they're grandparents came over. We had endless family dinners and hang outs where we compared how similar Islam and Judaism are and how all people just want the same thing. They had had to flee their home after it was bombed, 2 of the kids died when that happened, we never had the guts to ask what country bombed them...My parents hired a lawyer to help the oldest daughter get over, who was trapped in the old country with her two young children, because her husband had disappeared. We helped the mom get citizenship, the family get a car and get the eldest's son's new bride over. It was really nice to be able to do for another family what someone had once done for us. It made us feel this is what America is all about, an immigrant nation where we help each other prosper.
