I was having a discussion about religion with my uncle and he said the most wonderful thing about it: that religion is like fire. It's warm and comforting and the closer you get the more so it is, but if you get too close it will burn and consume you. I like this both in that I think it illustrates the role religion should play in our lives (admittedly, I'm more a barbecue you dust off a few times a year person than living room fireplace type) and the difference between being devout and radicalized. I think any religion if you stand right in the fire, makes you a crazy extremist, whether it be a vicious kill the infidels type or maybe just a stand offish cultist. May we all at some point figure out how to keep the hearth burning without letting the flames lick up our arms!
