811: Hooting Cute

I really don't like Long Island ducks AKA Pekin ducks. Aside from the fact that I have an aversion to the color white, I find the fact that they are the closest thing we have to an industrial breed off putting. The pure white is particularly displeasing when you think about the fact that they were bred that color to make more attractive corpses. Previously the go-to meat duck was the Cayuga, which are a beautiful iridescent black and the drakes have tones of green on their heads. They lay gray eggs and sometimes black eggs, which is just cool. I realize that one could look at any duck as walking dinner, but the oversized, overbred, bland Long Island duck seems so lame compared to Welsh Harlequins, Silver Appleyards and all those other cool types out there.
