So while I'm proud that making a concentrated effort to give my son a social circle of friends from different ethnic backgrounds has paid off, I'll be very curious to see how things play out with our efforts to down play gender. I always refer to his peers as kids instead of boys and girls. He can tell the difference between men and women (he's corrected me for calling teen age girls 'big kids', insisting they are mommies). However, there really is no way to ID a boy or girl if they have their clothes on. Most people use a collection of clothing clues, haircut or name, which isn't always accurate anyway. Right now he will toddler up to other children and say "Hey kid!". I assume when he goes to school is when he'll figure out the whole gender thing, but we'll see.
