634: Undate

I had an interesting chat with a lifeguard at one of the local ponds last week. He was arguing that he felt that he did live a privileged life as a white male and I was arguing that he was privileged because he was middle class and lived in the Northeast. One of his examples of privilege was that no one had ever told him not to walk out alone after dark. I argued this was actually a disadvantage, because it's not safe to galavant about in deserted areas in the wee hours of the morning and he had actually be denied this important advice. He then told me that he was given male advantage because they had him guarding the most remote of the ponds. Previously a slender teenage girl had been doing it, but her parents complained the area was dangerous and wanted them to put a second life guard there. Instead, they switched her to another pond, which ended up reducing her hours and put this 24 year old strapping young man. I pointed out that he was older, bigger and elected to take the risk. If there had been a 6 foot tall, 24 year old woman, they may have offered it to her instead. Besides, if the pond is really dangerous, which I don't think it is, then him taking the riskier post for more hours isn't want I'd call a privilege. At any rate, our conversation got cut short by an inebriated gentleman wanting to talk about Vietnam. Now that I think about it, maybe that was a little sketchy for 11 AM...
