You may have noticed I didn't take Columbus Day off. In offices, whether they give you this national holiday off really depends on the workplace. In my case, I purposely decided not to observe it any capacity, because I don't like Christopher Columbus. I realize that he was a product of his time and very few explorers were nice men and while I'm grateful that the United States exists as a country, I feel like celebrating him is incredibly callous to all the descendants of the people who were in the U.S. first and got totally screwed over by the explorers and settlers. We shouldn't feel guilty about the past, but on the other hand glorifying past monster doesn't make sense either.
