355 and 356: God Date

I discovered a new comics creator recently, Craig Thompson, who writes hands down the most depressing stories I've read this decade and yet also writes some of the most compelling stories I have read recently as well. His artwork is breathtaking, truly showing the majesty of black and white brush work and his page layouts are masterful. What is even more delightful is that the stories are so engrossing that the art in no way overshadows the narrative, but instead enriches the experiences, a true marriage of words and pictures. Despite themes of sexual abuse and oppression running rampant through both Blankets and Habibi, they both managed to have satisfying endings that made the ride worth it. If you're looking for one comic book to read this year, I'd recommend picking up one of Mr. Thompson's opuses.
