317: Reality Check

We are in the process of buying our first house. We've made it as far as the inspection process. Previously I didn't realize how expensive or complicated the whole thing was. I didn't realize you needed extra insurance if you put down less than 20%  or that closing costs could be several thousand dollars. It was also a real eye opener to see how many properties on the market were badly maintained. My sweetheart's family always favored new construction and my family has always been into lovingly restoring old homes, so the concept that many people might not take pride in ownership and lovingly maintain their homes was a real shock. Happily, we've found one built in 1978, very well kept and with attractive architecture sitting on an acre of land and within our price range. I'm hoping the inspections go well and come summer we'll be installed in our new home!
