I have a friend up in rural Maine whose a vegetarian, but decided that her young children needed meat, so every spring she buys a lamb, lets it frolic in her fields and butchers it come winter. I have a lot of respect for her for doing that. I've contemplated doing that with the fern moat out front, but we're thinking of starting with ducks for eggs and seeing if I can still bring myself to eat poultry. On a whole though, I try to buy meat that is marked as humanely raised. We have a big block freezer, currently stocked with meals for post tiny human's arrival that we eventually plan to store half a heritage breed hog in. There are a lot of small farms in New England where you can confirm that the animal had a happy, albeit short, existence before being killed. That's what I'd pref to eat.
